Syphilis {Siff-uh-liss}

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacteria. Lately, there have been more people testing positive for syphilis in Thunder Bay. The infection can be spread from sexual contact with an infected person, including through anal or oral sex. It can also be spread by sharing sex toys.

Why worry about syphilis?

Left untreated, syphilis can cause long term damage to the body such as heart disease, brain damage, paralysis, blindness or death. It is a CURABLE disease, but best treated early.

What are the symptoms?

Infected people MAY NOT HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS which is why it is important to be tested. If symptoms are present they may include the following:

  • Painless sores on or near the penis, in the mouth or the rectum
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Painless rash on the palms of the hands, feet or whole body
  • Patchy hair loss
  • Warts in the genital area
  • Feeling unwell

How is syphilis tested?

A blood test screens for syphilis bacteria. If a sore is present, a swab can be taken. Come in ASAP if you notice a sore.

How is syphilis treated?

Syphilis is treated with a special dose of antibiotics prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner.
